Superficial changes implemented to revive a product’s flagging reputation often fail to achieve anything but befuddlement.  Nissan Motor’s decision to scuttle the Datsun moniker is different, however, and makes for an interesting case study for two reasons.  First, the switch was accomplished gradually, over several model years.  Second, its objective - ostensibly to conserve resources and strengthen the parent company’s global brand - was a sound one.
